The project was highly relevant to government and ADB policies and priorities to improve the quality of life of Municipality/ Town by improving Water supply, Drainage and Sanitation services. The WUA were aware regarding health and hygiene education. The WUSC member and staff were provided technical training to develop their capacity for the O&M of the project regarding meter reading, meter maintenance, plumbing, testing water quality and operating pumps. The project was an example of community participation and ownership. The project was rated efficient in achieving its outcomes and outputs, based on financial and economic analyses. Hand washing, bathing and latrines- use habits improved. The WUSC are trained in social, technical and financial component of the project. The project has successfully promoted good governance in term of beneficiaries, wide participation, transparency and the accountability of all the stakeholders.
The project has been implemented on co-financing with WUSC's contribution of 50% of the water supply component and 20% by Municipality/ VDC office in drainage and sanitation component under ADB loan. The participation of local communities during both design and implementation phase was a crucial factor for the successful and effective implementation of the projects. Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project is unique of its kind in Nepal, based on community participation and COST RECOVERY PRINCIPAL.
Itahari Municipality Project: Itahari Project is located at Itahari Sub Metropolitan City in sunsari district in Eastern Development Region. The services area of the project covers ward no. 1to 9 of Itahari Sub Metropolitan City, Ekamba and Hansoposa. The project was divided into three sub projects: Itahari –A, Itahari-B, Itahari-C. Itahari-A includes rehabilitation and improvement of existing system and Itahari-B, C consists of new system. Total HH in project area was7760 and survey population was 38,913.The total no of house connection was 7022.Supply and installation of 5022 number of new water meter and replacement of 2000 meter. The project consists of Structural design of two nos. of 450 cum RCC Overhead tank, four new deep tube-wells of depth108-120m and improvement of existing two deep tube wells, Six nos. of pumps installation,2 nos. of transformer,3 set of generator 100KVA, 91.99 km distribution and main pipe system(Consists of DI pipe size350-200mm of 9.8Km length),Three nos. of Water treatment plant 75 ltr/sec,1200M storm Drainage, Bulk meter, Firehydrant- 45 nos., Testing and commissions, Pressure Filter treatment plants- 3 nos., 200 meter surface drainage, public toilets-1 nos, pump house-4 nos, Guard house -3 nos, office building-3 nos, guard house- 3 nos.,3 nos., of chemical dozing block, walkway, Compound wall-2nos and site development works etc.
Belbari Municipality Project: Belbari Project is located at Belbari Municipality in Morang District of Koshi Zone in Eastern Development Region. The service area of the Project covers ward no. 1,2,3 and 4 of Belbari Municipality.Total HH in project area was 2653 and survey population was 14220.The total no of house connection was 3000 and supply and installation of 3000 water meters. The project consists of Structural design of one nos of 450 cum RCC overhead tank, four new deep tube-wells of depth108-120m ,Four nos of pumps installation,1 nos of transformer,1 set of generator 100KVA, 1750 m Drainage system, 29 km distribution and main pipe system(Consists of DI ,GI and HDPE pipe size350-200mm of 4.6Km length),one nos of Water treatment plant 75 ltr/sec,1200M storm Drainage pump house-2 nos, Guard house -1 nos, office building-1 nos, chemical dozing block, Compound wall-1nos and site development works etc.
